Shasta Dam Raise EIR Scoping Comments

On January 14, 2019, we joined with the Environmental Protection Information Center, the Klamath Forest Alliance, the Nature Rights Council, and Klamath-Siskiyou Wild to make comments in opposition to the irresponsible and devastating proposal under consideration to raise the height of Shasta Dam by 18.5 feet.

This project would affect the Shasta salamander and several other rare and endemic species of plants and animals. It is also contrary to the National Historic Preservation Act, flooding new parts of the McCloud River, home to many sacred sites of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, who lost 90 percent of their land when the dam was first constructed. The project would also severely affect flows vital to steelhead, coho and Chinook salmon fisheries.
