In 2020 we are excited to announce the ‘Trailhead Host’ Project, part of our Honor Our Mountain Environment (HOME) Program, in partnership with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest (STNF).

While many other National Forests and Grasslands have had continuing varied levels of closures due to the pandemic, the STNF has been open. And it’s no secret to new and experienced outdoor recreation lovers.

We understand very well that tourism plays a major role in our local economy, and we support that industry when our public lands are being cared for properly by outdoor enthusiasts. More importantly, we recognize our responsibility as a community-led environmental organization to step up and help inform recreationalists to be the best stewards while enjoying the natural landscapes that the STNF has to offer.

Thus, poor use of our local National Forest kicked into gear a project that would help remind people how to ‘recreate responsibly,’ including camping in designated dispersed areas.

We joined forces with the STNF to create the ‘Trailhead Host’ Project. This project allows locals to volunteer, with proper training from the Forest Service, to help educate visitors in the National Forest on leave no trace ethics, proper land stewardship, information on fire safety, trail and campground information, information on the area and so on. Trailhead Hosts stage at various moderate and high use areas including but not limited to Panther Meadows, South Gate, Bunny Flats, and McCloud Falls. We are excited about this partnership and being able to help the Forest Service in disseminating information and extending their messaging in order to keep this bioregion pristine.

With increased used of National Forest land, and lack of reliable and accurate information on the use of these areas, our Trailhead Hosts Project will be able to make a dramatic impact on this void.
