Medicine Lake Highlands Tour

On Saturday, August 29th, we’re planning a unique exploration of the Medicine Lake Highlands, known as California’s most varied volcanic landscape on the largest shield volcano on our continent. The Highlands are highly significant to Native Americans as a Traditional Cultural District and of prime importance for California’s water supply. We will start at 8:30 a.m. in Mount Shasta (with option to meet in Bartle) and end in the Highlands at 4:30.

This tour will be held conditions permitting, depending on the status of a forest fire that is currently raging near the area.

We’ll visit some of the main features of the Medicine Lake Highlands, including Medicine Lake, Glass Mountain, Burnt Lava Flow, and others.

There will be talks by water policy expert Dr. Marcus Griswold on the Highlands’ hydrological significance, as well as by Michelle Berditschevsky of the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center and Janie Painter of  Medicine Lake Citizens for Quality Environment, on our 22-year efforts to protect the Highlands from industrial geothermal energy extraction, including interesting characteristics of the landscapes we’ll be visiting.

Due to the need to maintain social distancing, the tour will be limited to 20 participants. Participants should bring a lunch, water, sturdy walking shoes, and be prepared for all weather.

The hosting organizations will provide fruit and chocolate.

A schedule including where to meet and an itinerary will be sent upon registration. To register, please fill out the form below:
