Herb Walk with Bear Wallow Herbs

Cara Saunders

Earth Day is the perfect time to connect more deeply with nature.

Join herbalist Cara Saunders, founder/owner of Bear Wallow Herbs Friday April 22nd at 3:30pm to explore the local plant life in Mt. Shasta City Park at 1315 Nixon Road Mount Shasta 96067.

Learn how having a relationship with native herbs and naturalized weeds can improve our health and quality of life. If we take care of the land and water, plants can take care of us by providing food and medicine.

All ages are welcome for a fun, easy walk through the park as we observe, touch, smell, and listen to stories about the herbs that live in our neighborhood. Meet by the playground and bring a water bottle.

Grateful Stewardship and Teachings of the Bees

Mariana Riquelme-Harmon

Mariana Riquelme-Harmon will begin with prayers for the bees and all life connected with Mother Earth at 10:30am Saturday April 23rd at the Community Garden in Shastice Park 800 Rockfellow Mount Shasta 96067.

We will talk about their present status worldwide and locally, and what is affecting the bees as there are multiple stressors upon them. What we can do to help them out during this very difficult time and why I began beekeeping.

My personal experiences have taught me about taking care of bees to better serve them and the environment. How grateful I am working with them and their personal teachings.  How the hive structure works in harmony for the whole of the colony.  What we can learn from them and what you should know before starting your own hive.

I will provide community sources and education that are available to new beekeepers and how my hives are set up and the different types of hive structures that are available to you.  Q&A time for open discussion. Immediately following this presentation, Kendra Bainbridge will begin her Mason Bee Box workshop.  Stay for both!

Mason Bee Box Creation

Kendra Bainbridge

Join us with Kendra Bainbridge on Saturday April 23rd at 11am at the Community Garden in Shastice Park at 800 Rockfellow Mount Shasta 96067 to make mason bee boxes that you’ll have to keep!  All materials provided, bring a favorite hammer if you have one.

After learning about the importance of bees and making your own bee box (1 per household) you can take it to the Art Cart to decorate at Spring Spring Hill Nursery (noon-4pm).

This is a family friendly workshop, however adult supervision is advised for younger children as we will be using nails and hammer.

S.C.R.A.P.S. Art Cart

Siskiyou County Art Council

The SCRAPS Art Cart will be providing FREE, all-age art projects made from upcycled materials that are often discarded such as bird-feeders made from plastic bottles and painted plant pots made from tin cans.

Have some tin cans you’d like to repurpose? Drop them off at Spring Hill Nursery & Gardens during their normal business hours before April 23. After creating the pots from tin cans, we’ll plant a seed!

Additionally, if you joined in on the mason bee box workshop, you can bring those to the art cart to decorate.

Community Garden Clean-up Party

Community Garden Clean-up Party

A great opportunity to stretch and do some light gardening cleanup with community friends at the Community Garden Clean-up Party in Shastice Park.  Join us on Saturday April 23rd at 12pm.

Having a garden plot is not necessary.  The garden’s coordinator will be present, so if you have any questions about renting a plot, they can be answered.

Tools will be supplied.

Water Blessing Ceremony & Earth Poetry

Michelle Berditschevsky and Ray Nobriga

On Saturday April 23rd starting at 2 p.m., a Water Blessing Ceremony & Poetry Reading will be held just down from the Headwaters Spring at Mt. Shasta City Park.

This year’s Ceremony (our 8th annual Water Blessing) will be led by Ray Nobriga, who is a shamanic practitioner in the Peruvian tradition, and Michelle Berditschevsky, founder of the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center and long-time learner from local Tribal Elders.

Michelle will open the Blessing with a simple ritual in which together we’ll invoke the gifts of Water.

Ray will then lead us in an Andean Despacho Ceremony. The term Despacho refers to the act of preparing a ceremonial offering to acknowledge the gifts we receive from Nature and to strengthen and open a passageway of mutual support with the Unseen realms.

We will close in a circle offering our recognition for the precious gift of Water, with the help of local poets who will read from their work.
