The Mount Shasta Herald, our local newspaper, has generously agreed to publish articles of interest to the community, under the heading of the “Sustainability Column”.

This column began as a project of Shasta Commons, formerly a fiscally sponsored project of ours, with a vision to create a resilient, sustainable Siskiyou County community in harmony with nature where the majority of our basic needs are supplied locally.

Its mission was to be a resource network to assist in the organization and promotion of local and sustainable goods and services through education, existing and planned community projects. Projects included promotion of cooperative organic food growing and distribution, a neighborhood fruit harvest program, micro-farming workshops and local currency/ trade bank.

Important values include:

  • Community
  • Resilience
  • Sustainability
  • Creativity
  • Equitability
  • Participation
  • Education

In January 2018, the Ecology Center took on the coordination of column submissions, with the formation of a “Writer’s Bureau” of local authors interested in producing columns in accordance with our editorial guidelines. If you are interested in learning more, or joining as an author of a positive article on sustainability, please contact our Development and Communications Director, Bianca Garza by emailing bianca@mountshastaecology.org.
